Marmaris was once a sleepy small fishing village, whose people traded fish, sponge and aromatic herbs with neighbouring Rhodes. History of Marmaris
The history of Marmaris (formerly known as Phsykos) first started in 3400 BC by tribe, whose leaders name was Kar. Then, the country of those inhabitants was called ‘Karia’ which literally refers to ‘Country of Kar’. There are still many relics to be seen from the Karia civilisation in Asartepe, which is 1 km. away from Marmaris. Marmaris has sequentially been ruled by the Egyptians, Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines and the Ottomans. Following declaration of republic, Marmaris is given provencial status of modern Turkey.
Traces of these civilisations can be found in the surrounding areas of Marmaris: Amos (Hisarönü-Turunç), Bybassos (Hisarönü), Kastabos (Hisarönü), Syma (Bayır köyü), Larymna (Bozburun), Thyssanos (Söğüt), Phoinix (Taşlıca), Loryma (Bozukkale), Kasara (Serçe limanı), Kedrai (Sedir Adası), Euthena ve Amnistos (Karacasöğüt).

Geography
Marmaris is located at the intersection point of Agean and Mediterranean seas and being world’s largest natural harbour.
Being situated in southwest Turkey, Marmaris is one of the leading resorts in world tourism arena. On the north lies Gulf of Gökova national park and on the south ever-beautiful Mediterranean. On the west Datca peninsula that once sheltered famous ancient site of Knidos and on the east Köycegiz lake surrounded by güllük (just peculiar to the region) trees.
Old part of town is residential area with variety of shops, cafeterias, bars, and restaurants, which built around glorius Marmaris castle. The old stone houses (Hand-built by masters) are all listed buildings, and the narrow streets leading to them are delight to explore. Marmaris is all year around home to many different nationalities. Marmaris also has 700 berth modern marina that shelters many yachts both summer and winter.
Population of Marmaris is about 20.000 in the winter and this figure reaches upto 100.000 during summer months. The town boundaries enclose the area of 86.000 hectares, of which 65.000 hectares is forest.

Marmaris is surrounded by pine-clad mountains,which retain the heat and makes the water temperature very comfortable. Sunny days accumulates approximately 280 days of a year. Winter is very mild with average temparature of 18,5C/65F and you can get by with a t-shirt or light jacket. Nights can be cool,but there is rarely a frost. Marmaris has a perfect winter climate, you can still swim and get a tan or alternatively get ready for bbq.
